Who doesn’t love a prototype? We certainly do, especially when it comes to the legendary Ferrari LaFerrari, as we previously covered the practically unrecognisable M4 and M6 test mules, which were based on the chassis of the Ferrari 458. However, now we are pleased to report that the far more familiar-looking LaFerrari Prototype P2 is heading to RM Sotheby’s Arizona auction on January 23rd, and it boasts a number of quirks that might make it the most tempting prototype of Ferrari’s hybrid holy trinity hypercar we’ve seen so far!

First things first, it actually looks like the LaFerrari we all know and love, albeit with some polka dot camouflage to confuse any spy photographers during development. Unlike the rolling science experiment test mules that came before it, “Proto F 150 - P2” as it was designated boasts a production-style La Ferrari body under the camouflage wrap, finished in a combination of Rosso and carbon fibre. It also boasts a chassis that closely adheres to that of the production LaFerrari, but the big difference between this prototype and the eventual road car lies in the engine bay.

Pop open that glorious rear clamshell, and you’ll find a naturally-aspirated 6.2-litre F140 FD V12 engine, notably missing any of the LaFerrari’s trick HY-KERS hybrid system. While this means this prototype won’t be achieving the production LaFerrari’s total output of 950 horsepower, it will be quite a bit lighter without all those heavy electronics, making it something of a LaFerrari ‘superleggera’. Other notable differences include a more rounded steering wheel and a host of mystery electrical equipment in the passenger footwell, offering a fascinating insight into the LaFerrari’s development process. If we had a LaFerrari in our collection, we would definitely think seriously about adding this incredible prototype to the garage!
