Once raced at the Targa Florio, this Porsche 910 is far from retirement

The Porsche 910 was created to address the limitations of the 906 Carrera 6 and provide a competitive edge against formidable rivals like Ferrari and Ford. All 910s were raced hard, but this Porsche 910 from Grand Prix Classics saw the world's best circuits, both in period and in historical racing!

Headed by Ferdinand Piëch, Porsche’s development team had a clear focus in mind when seeking to improve on the already impressive 906. Campaigned for just the 1966 and 1967 race years, the 910 refined Porsche’s mid-engine prototype formula and solidified the brand’s reputation for precision engineering, lightweight construction, and exceptional handling. Despite its short production run, the 910 achieved remarkable success, competing against some of the greatest race cars of its era in endurance races, hill climbs, and circuit events. A certified hit amongst the race fans, and the envy of most of their rivals, the 910’s racked up victories all over the world, with this very example available from our friends at Grand Prix Classics contributing to that impressive tally of podiums.

The Porsche 910 utilised a tubular steel spaceframe chassis with a sleek fiberglass body, all innovative and more advanced than previous racers from Porsche, but one of the key innovations of the 910 was its use of 13-inch Formula 1-style wheels, instead of the 15-inch wheels used on the 906. This change allowed for lower-profile tires, improving handling and reducing weight. This agility, combined with its gorgeous-yet-purposeful curvaceous body design, which was specifically created to minimize drag and enhance stability at high speeds have the 910 an edge over just about any other car on the grid.

Looking into historical data and Porsche’s own factory records, this car was entered by Porsche's competition department with a 2.2-litre 8-cylinder engine in the Targa Florio of 1967, driven by Gerhard Mitter and Colin Davis. This car unfortunately wouldn't finish the gruelling race, but in a sign of the car's dominance,  the top three finishers were all driving Porsche 910s. Just two months on from the Targa Florio, this 910 would then experience Mugello’s 500-kilometre endurance race, bouncing back from its disappointment with a first in class overall. What followed was a truly stunning display of race entries, where the car was owned by Ben Hurr Racing, racking up miles in Zolder, Zandvoort, Hockenheim and the notorious Nürburgring.

After passing through various privateers, the car would then find its feet within historical racing events. From 1990 through to present day, this Porsche 910 has since returned to the Nürburgring, as well as battling it out at the Spa 6 Hours and Le Mans Classic, as well as the coveted Monterey Historic in Laguna Seca.

The 910 truly was a transitional masterpiece. Bridging between Porsche’s early racing efforts and the dominance it would later achieve. It showcased the company’s commitment to innovation, lightweight design, and precision engineering, values that continue to define Porsche today, and make the chance to acquire one with a storied history such as this one a truly rare opportunity!
