Of the thousands of cars purpose-built for competition over the years, only a tiny fraction makes it into the history books. Such cars also remain in people’s memories – such as this Alfa Romeo Alfasud, which was discovered by a man who remembers watching it race when he was a boy…

Weekend Hero

With a young Filippo Niccolini at the helm, this potent little Alfasud won the 1976 Trofeo Alfasud Championship, claiming victories at Mugello, Varano, Vallelunga, Misano and Monza in the process. The one-model series proved immensely popular in Italy in the late 1970s and early 1980s, attracting some of the finest drivers from across Italy, and beyond. At one special charity race in which the series’ regular drivers were even paired with Formula 1 stars at Varano, this example was driven by Ronnie Peterson – the illustrious ‘Super Swede’. It’s now for sale with Classic Driver dealer Weekend Heroes, which has created this beautifully shot short film about the car. If the grunty warble of the 115bhp boxer engine doesn’t raise the hairs on the back of your neck, we suspect the thought of Ronnie Peterson making the car dance in his inimitable style will...
