The Mercedes-Benz Vision Iconic is Bruce Wayne's art deco dream

We’ve been looking long and hard for an ideal daily driver replacement for a certain Batsuit-toting superhero, and it seems Mercedes-Benz has had the answer all along. Bursting into the world with the perfect blend of old-meets-new goodness, this is the Vision Iconic concept car.

Mercedes-Benz has always had a gift for blending art and engineering, and with the Vision Iconic, the brand presents a concept car that feels as much a tribute to its past as it does a statement of its future. Conceived as a “sculpture in motion,” the Vision Iconic encapsulates what Mercedes calls “hyper-analogue luxury,” merging classic craftsmanship with futuristic digital intelligence.

At first glance, the car’s silhouette evokes the golden age of the automobile, toting sweeping lines and majestic hood and rear arches recalling the 1930s’ grand tourers and icons like the 300 SL Gullwing. Yet this is no retro pastiche, instead, the Vision Iconic radiates modern confidence. Its deep black gloss paint gleams like liquid obsidian, while the bold, upright chrome grille, a Mercedes hallmark, has been reimagined for the digital era.

This new “Iconic Grille” first appeared on the 2025 electric GLC, but in Vision Iconic form it becomes a central design statement. A smoked-glass lattice, framed in chrome and infused with contour lighting, gives the car an unmistakable presence. The illuminated three-pointed star, standing proudly on the bonnet, adds a touch of theatre with Mercedes enthusiasts around the world rejoicing at its return.

As Chief Design Officer Gorden Wagener explains, “Vision Iconic is more than an automobile, it is a sculpture in motion, a homage to timeless elegance, and a statement for the future.” Inspired by the purity of Art Deco design, the car’s flowing surfaces and poised stance convey a balance of serenity and power rarely achieved in modern automotive design.

Step inside, and the story deepens. There’s a juxtaposition between ultra-modern technology and automated driving and the numerous art deco touches around the cabin. A continuous front bench in deep blue velvet encourages relaxation, while intricate mother-of-pearl marquetry and polished brass details evoke the grandeur of pre-war craftsmanship. The centrepiece, known as the “Zeppelin”, is a floating glass instrument cluster, its analogue animation paying homage to the precision of fine watchmaking. Even the floor is a work of art: a hand-laid straw marquetry fan motif, a technique dating back to the 17th century, reinterpreted here for a sustainable, modern age. Every detail — down to the Mercedes logo suspended in a glass sphere at the steering wheel’s heart — whispers quiet opulence.

Underneath the elegance lies pioneering technology. The Solar Paint, developed by Mercedes-Benz researchers, transforms the car’s bodywork into an energy-generating surface. Applied like a wafer-thin paste, the coating could yield up to 12,000 kilometres of additional range per year under ideal conditions, without relying on rare earths or silicon. Paired with neuromorphic computing, steer-by-wire, and a fully digital architecture, Vision Iconic represents Mercedes’ commitment to sustainability and innovation in equal measure.
