Is the Dacia Hipster concept Gen Z’s Fiat Panda?

Longtime champions of affordable mobility Dacia have unveiled a new concept for a compact, affordable urban hatchback with Kei car proportions and a vibe that is distinctly reminiscent of the widely-loved original Fiat Panda.

If you know Classic Driver, you’re aware that we have a real soft spot for the classic Fiat Panda. Boxy, functional, and undeniably lovable, the affordable first-generation Panda brought mobility to the masses in a stylish package that appealed to all walks of life. As subsequent generations haven’t quite managed to capture that same magic, it seems a different marque is picking up the Panda’s mantle, and it isn’t who you might expect. Dacia — producers of some of Europe’s most affordable rides — have just revealed this, the Hipster concept, an electric hatchback the size of Japan’s Kei cars whose boxy aesthetic is undeniably reminiscent of the iconic classic Panda.

Weighing less than 800 kilograms and at just three metres long, the Hipster is perfectly proportioned to fit through Europe’s city centres, yet despite its diminutive stature, there’s enough room inside for four fully-grown adults. While this concept’s cabin will certainly see some changes before it reaches production, the Hipster’s vibrant interior is a far more welcoming and well-equipped offering than that of the Fiat Topolino and Citroën Ami, while its boxy design maximises interior space within the Hipster’s petite footprint. And no, despite the name, you won’t have to wear hemp clothing or be a regular consumer of yerba mate to take the wheel.

Expected to cost between 10,000 to 15,000 euros, the Hipster could be around half the price of the new (much larger) electric Panda, but whether it succeeds to capture the hearts of the general public in the same way as the Mini Cooper and original Fiat Panda remains to be seen.
