Some moments in automotive history feel like a true a full stop. A moment where iconic models are retired, or legislation pushes brands to rethink their direction, leaving fans questioning what the future will look like. For Porsche purists, 1995 was one of those pivotal moments, and the 993-generation 911 Turbo marked the end of the air-cooled era, the final expression of that unmistakable whirring, mechanical heartbeat that defined the 911 for more than three decades. Taking the already special Turbo model and cranking it up to eleven, this one-of-14 Turbo Cabriolet heading to Iconic Auctioneers upcoming sale makes for one of the most intriguing additions to any Porsche lover’s collection.
The 993 Turbo Coupé was first launched to the world in September 1995, with firm plans from Porsche to not produce a Cabriolet variant, but with enough vision and deep enough pockets, a client could persuade Porsche to create extra special cars within their 'Sonderwunsch' programme. This example is one of just that, ordered by Fritz Haberl’s MAHAG Porsche distributorship in Munich. The story goes that, with the 964 Turbo model out of production and no 993-turbo package in the offing until at least 1995, the only possibility for a customer who demanded a Turbo was to have a car built to order, always a costly proposition.
Porsche agreed to Haberl’s proposition, but he’d need to purchase at least ten cars, which would of course reduce the per-unit price. Haberl didn’t need to think twice, and the order was quickly confirmed, where work began at Porsche Exclusive. In total, Haberl was able to source 14 orders worldwide. This example is one of those exclusive 14 produced, but has never previously been publicly offered for sale, making this a truly once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Right-hand drive, finished in Amaranth Violet over a Marble Grey and Black full leather interior, once delivered new to Hong Kong, this incredible example is estimated to fetch anything in the region of £700,000 and beyond, a figure we expect it to easily reach and likely surpass!
