Description

Chassis No. AM101935

Engine No. AM101935

Conceived to rival the Ferrari 250 GT at the height of the grand touring era, the Maserati 3500 GT emerged as an elegant 2+2 sports coupé powered by a 3.5-liter inline six-cylinder engine, fed by three Weber 42 DCOE carburetors. Developing 220 cavalli vapore (horsepower), it carried the car to a top speed of 220 km/h.

The Spyder, its convertibile iteration, produced in only 242 examples and dressed by the eminent Giovanni Michelotti for Carrozzeria Vignale, was officially unveiled in October 1960, at the 1960 Paris Motor Show before entering production in 1961.

Completed in May 1960, as confirmed by Maserati Classiche, this Spyder numbers among the earliest produced, preceding full-scale industrial production by several months. Delivered new to a company in Turin, Italy, the capital of Piedmont and a historic center of Italian automobile manufacturing, it was specified in the particularly refined combination of Grigio Scuro Metallizzato with a Cuoio Naturale Marrone leather, paired with a ZF S 4/17 manual transmission. Its distinctive hood, extending to the base of the windshield, a feature absent from standard production models, lends this particular car something of a prototype character.

Following a period in the United States, the Spyder returned to Italy in 2008 and was acquired by its current owner, still retaining its original, matching-numbers engine. Between 2014 and 2018, it underwent a full concours-level restoration carried out by the renowned Bacchelli & Villa and Rossocorsa, official Ferrari and Maserati dealer in Italy. The Spyder was repainted in its original color and fitted with an exceptionally rare, original hardtop, of which only around forty were supplied new, painted to pair with its brown leather interior. Since its restoration, the car has been driven only sparingly.

This Spyder brings together all the qualities sought in a fine vintage Italian motor car: genuine sporting character, open-top appeal, and discreet 2+2 accommodation within elegant lines. It embodies some of the great names of Italian automotive history: the engineering talent of Giulio Alfieri, the craftsmanship of Carrozzeria Vignale, and the design of Giovanni Michelotti. Retaining its matching-numbers engine, fitted with a rare hardtop, and the subject of a comprehensive and carefully executed restoration, it is now ready for its next chapter.
