From January 2026, Alpina will operate under BMW’s umbrella as a distinct marque, defined by bespoke luxury, effortless performance and a design language that subtly nods to its heritage. Part of that identity has always been visual as much as mechanical, from classic Alpina Blue and Alpina Green paintwork to fine Lavalina leather, hand-finished wood veneers and signature pinstriping that quietly set these cars apart.

Founded in the 1960s by Burkard Bovensiepen, Alpina earned its reputation by transforming BMWs into something altogether more sophisticated, favouring torque, refinement and long-distance ability over outright aggression. Cars like the E24-based B7 Turbo, the legendary E34 B10 Bi-Turbo and successive generations of the B7 7 Series became icons precisely because they avoided shouting about their capabilities. Under BMW ownership, that ethos is set to continue, with future Alpina models expected to sit at the very top of the luxury-performance spectrum, offering connoisseurs an alternative to BMW M’s sharper performance focus.

While details of upcoming models remain under wraps, the relaunch signals BMW’s intent to preserve Alpina’s DNA at a time when the industry is rapidly changing. For collectors and Classic Driver readers alike, it is reassuring news: the blue-and-green crest will not be diluted or forgotten, but carefully curated for a new era — ensuring that Alpina remains what it has always been, a brand for those who know.
