Detailed restoration between 2016 and 2017
Introduced in 1965, the Lancia Fulvia Coupé radically transformed the Turin-based manufacturer's racing career. Rapidly evolving into the "HF" versions and, later, the iconic 1600 HF "Fanalone," the car became the mainstay of Cesare Fiorio's racing team. Thanks to a 1.6-liter engine capable of developing up to 165 hp in racing configuration, the Fulvia dominated the international scene, winning the World Championship for Makes in 1972 and 1974. Legendary drivers such as Sandro Munari and Harry Källström wrote history behind the wheel, cementing Lancia's reputation before the advent of legendary models such as the Stratos and the Delta. Beyond its performance, the Fulvia represented a fundamental evolutionary leap, marking the transition to the golden age of modern rallying. With over 4,900 units produced between road and rally versions, the model remains a piece of automotive history today, celebrated for its mechanical elegance and an enviable track record in an era when driver talent was the true key to success.
The example offered for sale is a rare testament to this glorious past. Equipped with a former works team engine (number 818540 VAR 1016), believed to originate from the 1970 Austrian Rally-winning car, this car boasts a unique pedigree. Its racing history includes participation in the 1975 San Remo Rally, where, driven by Delfino and DeNegri, it finished 33rd. After decades of documented ownership, the vehicle underwent a complete restoration, completed this year, to restore it to its original splendor. The work included a complete paint stripping, body repairs, and a meticulous mechanical reconstruction: every component, from the engine with overhauled valves and pistons to the original carburetors, close-ratio gearbox, and new racing clutch, was meticulously maintained to ensure maximum reliability. The suspension, with revised Koni shock absorbers, and the braking system have also been completely revamped. Thanks to its comprehensive documentation and rare provenance, this Fulvia 1600 HF is not just a classic car, but a collector's item ready to race again.
