The first Maserati to bear the name of a wind, the Mistral inaugurated a tradition that would continue for several decades. Its name, derived from the Latin word for "master," refers to the Mistral wind that sweeps through Provence and along the French Riviera, a wind renowned for its strength, capable of clearing the skies and bringing dry, sunny weather.

Designed by engineer Giulio Alfieri and stylist Pietro Frua to rival the Jaguar E-Type, the Mistral is the final Maserati with the six-cylinder engine from the brand's Formula One units, fitted with Lucas fuel injection, a key innovation of the model. Initially offered in 3.5-liter and later 3.7-liter, the evolution reached its zenith at 4.0 liters.

This top-of-the-line 4.0-litre engine was fitted from new to Maserati Mistral chassis number 1633, as confirmed by Maserati Classiche. One of only 37 Mistral 4.0-liter Spyders produced, this example was delivered new to Rome in the summer of 1966, originally finished in silver Argento Auteuil with a black Pelle Nero leather interior, according to the copy of the Avviso di Spedizione, the original delivery note, on file.

The car later spent several years in Austria before returning to Italy, where it was fully restored by Rossocorsa and Bacchelli & Villa in a striking Green with Beige leather interior color combination, while still retaining its matching-numbers engine and chassis. The subsequent Italian owner continued to have the car serviced by Rossocorsa, as evidenced by the invoices on file.

Its next German owner refined the restoration in 2022 with mechanical work carried out by renowned specialist Leo B. Peschl, supported by nearly €50.000 in detailed invoices on file. Two years later, its Belgian owner commissioned cosmetic work by Rock'n'Roll, with an additional €85.000 invoice, devoted to bringing the car's finish to an even higher standard.

Its original, matching-numbers 4.0-liter fuel-injected engine developing 265 CV, paired with a five-speed manual transmission and capable of a top speed of 235 km/h, together with an original hardtop, make this car the ultimate specification of the Mistral. Its previous owners have taken great care to restore and refine it in its exquisite Green finish, so that the next custodian may now fully enjoy it. In addition to the aforementioned invoices and a spare set of keys, the Mistral is delivered, as noted on its original 1966 delivery note, with its toolkit, and a spare Borrani wheel.
