Description

1983 Maserati Merak SS, chassis 460516, presented in rare right-hand drive configuration and benefiting from a comprehensive, documented restoration carried out by recognised Maserati specialists.

The Merak SS represents the final and most developed evolution of Maserati’s Citroën-era mid-engine grand tourer. Powered by a 3.0-litre quad-cam V6 producing approximately 220 bhp and paired with a ZF five-speed manual gearbox, the SS specification combined reduced weight, improved performance and a more traditional Maserati interior. With production ending in 1983 after approximately 1,832 Meraks were built across all variants, surviving SS examples — particularly right-hand drive cars — are increasingly scarce.

Chassis 460516 has a traceable and well-documented history. It was purchased at auction in May 1992 with 42,313 miles recorded and reappeared in a Bonhams sale in April 2008 from a deceased estate showing only 42,663 miles, indicating that the car spent much of the intervening period off the road.

Between 2017 and 2019 the car underwent an extensive restoration by McGrath Maserati and James E. Pearce. Works included engine and gearbox removal and rebuild, new clutch, carburettor overhaul, electrical rectification, steering repairs, bodywork restoration, repainting and a full interior retrim. Invoices and photographic documentation exceed £55,000. During this process a replacement speedometer was installed, with original readings recorded.

Since completion of the restoration the car has covered approximately 700 miles. Recent MOT records confirm consistent low use:

49,932 miles — June 2021
50,135 miles — July 2022
50,240 miles — August 2023
50,382 miles — March 2025

The car retains its identity following removal of a personalised registration and presents today in excellent mechanical and cosmetic condition, ready to drive and enjoy.

The Merak SS is increasingly recognised as one of the most distinctive Italian sports cars of the 1970s — combining Giugiaro design, mid-engine balance and genuine grand touring usability thanks to its rare 2+2 layout. Chassis 460516 represents a particularly compelling example: late production, rare specification, specialist restoration and documented provenance.

An opportunity to acquire a collector-grade Merak SS that remains fully usable and mechanically sorted.
