Description

Maserati had a long and successful racing history and by the 1970’s was doing a tremendous job of translating this race car knowledge into the underpinnings of some of the best and most beautiful GT coupes of all time.
In March of 1971 by then under Citroen’s control, Maserati unveiled their latest stunning GT coupe, once again named after a strong wind, this time on the Italian coast called the Bora.
The Bora made its debut at the Geneva Salon in March of 1971,production continuing until 1978,with 564 Boras being produced, of which only 289 4.7-litre cars like this were made.
The styling house Ital Design used Giorgetto Giugiaro to design what was Maserati’s first ever mid-engined super car, designed to compete with the other mid-engine supercars on offer from De-Tomaso, Ferrari and Lamborghini.
The engine used already had provenance in the Maserati 450 S race car and in this guise offers 310-BHP, from it’s 4,719-cubic-centimetre mid-mounted V-8 engine with four Weber 42 DCNF twin-choke carburettors.
All of which is routed through a ZF 5DS.25 five-speed manual transaxle. It features four-wheel independent suspension with unequal-length A-arms, coil springs, anti-roll bars, and hydraulic four-wheel disc brakes.
The car benefits from a wonderful cabin with some of the most gorgeous seats ever fitted to a car, the visibility forwards is superb and combined with the light yet precise steering allows you to position the car through the corners with almost pinpoint accuracy.
One of the benefits from the Citroen ownership was their expertise in hydraulics which was used with great effect to power the pedal box and the clutch, whilst the steering wheel can be tilted and adjusted telescopically, allowing even taller drivers to get very comfortable.
This particular example is painted in the fabulous colour of Rame Metallizzato (Copper) with the interior trim in beige leather. The car has benefitted from a repaint at some point in its life we suspect and has been done to a very high standard at still presents very well today. The interior has been left original and now has charming patina that suits the car well.
Mechanically everything works as it should and the engine pulls well with plenty of torque and starts well from cold. This really is a fantastic place to spend time and hustling the car along your favourite roads will see you smiling from ear to ear the whole way.
Feel free to give us a call and arrange a viewing to see for yourself.
