More original than this is simply not possible. A stunning, Italian delivered Ferrari 208 GTB in fully original condition, complete with its accompanying documentation and various invoices. This fire red gem has never been restored and has been excellently cared for both cosmetically and mechanically. Much of that is thanks to the specialists at Italauto in Achterveld, who have maintained this classic Ferrari to perfection. They devoted their expertise to a delightful 2.0 litre V8, which immediately explains where Maranello found the inspiration for the name 208. This Gran Turismo Berlinetta is rich in authentic details, such as a leather Nardi Ferrari steering wheel, Veglia Borletti instruments and toggle switches, and an original Blaupunkt Atlanta SQR22 radio cassette player. All in all, a pure collector’s item. Please note, enthusiasts only.
History
We never thought we would say this about a Ferrari classic, but the 208 GTB began its life in 1980 for fiscal reasons. By reducing the displacement of the original 308 to 2.0 litres, Italian buyers were able to save a considerable amount of tax. As a result, this version was mainly aimed at Ferrari’s home market, without anyone realising that it would one day become a global icon. With the 208 GTB, Maranello produced one of the smallest V8 engines ever to leave the factory. On paper it replaced the 208 GT4 2 plus 2, while at the same time the six cylinder Dino 246 was phased out. Nevertheless, production numbers remained extremely limited, with only 140 GTBs built between 1980 and 1981. This particular example has never been restored since its delivery in 1981, making it especially unique. Added to that, our Italian thoroughbred has been meticulously maintained both visually and mechanically. The original documentation supplied, including various invoices, shows that Italauto in Achterveld has been responsible for the excellent servicing carried out in recent years. Chapeau.
Exterior
The Ferrari 208 GTB is almost indistinguishable from its 308 sibling, which is just as desirable. This means the 208 shares the same crisp Pininfarina lines, including sharp angles, pop up headlamps with air vents behind them, large air ducts behind the doors, star design wheels and twin round rear light units. Legendary designer Leonardo Fioravanti led the creation of this beautiful work of art on wheels. And while no colour truly does the Gran Turismo Berlinetta a disservice, Rosso Corsa is undoubtedly the shade in which the supercar looks its very best. Besides the paintwork, the body itself has also remained completely original. After 42 years, this Italian beauty still shows no need for restoration, which says everything about how lovingly it has been treated all this time. And if it is up to us, it will continue to be.
Interior
Sitting in the 208 GTB is an extraordinary experience. Everything looks, feels and smells exactly as a classic Ferrari should. The fact that every detail remains original adds greatly to its charm. It is immediately clear that the original buyer had impeccable taste. The Nero leather interior is finished with light contrast stitching along the top of the instrument binnacle and on the inside of the Nardi Ferrari steering wheel. The headlining is finished in cream, but it is the Veglia Borletti gauges and toggle switches that truly steal the show. Authenticity is further enhanced by the presence of the original Blaupunkt Atlanta SQR22 radio cassette player. One cannot help but wonder how often Dolce Vita was played in this magical cockpit.
Technology and performance
The compact 2.0 litre Ferrari V8 features four twin Weber carburettors and is mated to a manual transmission. The five speed gearbox is a work of art in itself, with its beautifully machined aluminium gate and traditional H pattern. The naturally aspirated eight cylinder performs at its best at 6,800 rpm, when a total of 155 horsepower is delivered to the rear wheels. Even by classic Ferrari standards this may sound modest, but the soundtrack tells a very different story. This thoroughbred effortlessly sharpens all the senses and raises an almost absurd amount of goosebumps. Experience it at Prins.
