Alfa Romeo Montreal

When you deal in dream cars, temptation comes with the territory. In the case of this originally Dutch-delivered (!) and beautifully restored Alfa Romeo Montreal in its namesake Verde Montreal hue, the original supplying dealer didn’t hesitate for a second when the car returned to him about 10 years ago. Fred van Lingen lovingly bought back the V8-powered Alfa, decided to keep it for himself, and celebrated the reunion with a meticulous restoration. Both cosmetically and mechanically, the Italian coupe was returned to the condition it deserved. In 2024, a loyal Prins client took over the Montreal—clearly someone with an excellent sense of style. He now parts with it, only because a classic convertible better suits his collection. A rare opportunity for you!

History
No less than renowned Alfa Romeo dealer Van Lingen originally delivered this Montreal in 1973 to its first owner, an enthusiast from Utrecht. Some years later, the legendary coupé found its way back as a trade-in. And that suited the dealer perfectly—after all, letting go of the Montreal completely was something he could never do. The dream car remained on the mind of co-founder Fred van Lingen until, about a decade ago, fate offered him a unique chance: the Montreal returned to sender. This means that the second owner was the very same person who prepared it for the first. With its most recent caretaker—a highly valued Prins client—the Alfa has had only three owners in total. In recent years, it was sparingly driven, brought out only for the occasional pleasure drive. The result: the newly applied Verde Montreal paintwork remains flawless. Besides the respray, the engine and gearbox were fully rebuilt—by none other than Fred van Lingen himself. In March of this year came the sad news of Mister Alfa’s passing, but his passion for engineering lives on in this Montreal.

Exterior
The Alfa Romeo Montreal is pure seventies: flat body panels, chrome accents, sharp edges, and wonderfully quirky details. Note the ‘cooling slots’ just behind the doors, the NACA duct on the bonnet, and the partially louvered covers over the dual round headlights—an unmistakable look. This is an Alfa you can recognize instantly, not only by its details but also by its overall silhouette: the long nose, flat roofline, and gently sloping tail are quintessential Montreal. For this, we are eternally grateful to the great Marcello Gandini—then working for Bertone—who brought this masterpiece to production. Resprayed in Verde Montreal, the car is now even more of an eyecatcher than when it first left the factory. Bella macchina!

Interior
Inside, the Montreal is finished in light brown leather—Cuoio in Ferrari’s terminology. The warm cockpit is contrasted by a bold black dashboard, housing two massive instrument pods, numerous toggle switches, and a wide center console. This Montreal is as much a feast for the eyes inside as it is outside. Hands on the large wooden three-spoke steering wheel, clutch down, first gear engaged and…

Engineering & Performance
…the Alfa magic begins. The rebuilt V8 engine is a jewel: naturally aspirated, displacing just under 2.6 liters, and positioned well back in the chassis for improved weight distribution and balance. As a result, the Montreal drives beautifully. Mated to a fully rebuilt 5-speed manual gearbox, all 230 horses are sent to the rear wheels. Every detail of the drivetrain exudes care and passion; Fred van Lingen’s legacy quite literally lives under the bonnet of this icon. True to its sporting character, the Montreal delivers serious performance: 0–100 km/h in just 7.4 seconds and a top speed of 220 km/h—remarkable figures for its era. But above all, the authentic classic sports car feeling comes from the sound: that raw, glorious V8 symphony. They simply don’t make them like this anymore.
