The most amazing of these iterations, the Porsche 930 Turbo, continues to reign as the one of the premier sports cars for both enthusiasts and collectors. Capable of astonishing performance even by today’s standards, the Porsche 930 Turbo set top speed records, acceleration records, and inspired legions of dedicated enthusiasts to seek this pinnacle offering as the ultimate performance road car.The combination of phenomenal engineering and dramatic body design achieved yet an even higher level when the ‘Flachbau’ or ‘Slant Nose’ body package was developed to conform to Le Mans body design limitations for 935 racecars. These cars went on to win Le Mans, but also won the hearts and aspirations of many 930 turbo owners eager to capture this unique look for their road cars. Aftermarket tuners produced their own versions of this bodywork for standard production street 930 Turbos, but the quality of these conversions varied tremendously, with most body kits completed in fiberglass instead of steel. Seeing the market for this body design, Porsche prepared to deliver its own Slant Nose variant for road cars beginning in 1981, the first generation models were available through special order Sonderwunsch (‘special wish’). By the mid 1980s, the Slant Nose factory M505 option was made available as a $29,555.00 option, featuring aerodynamic flat front fenders with functional venting and pop-up headlamps, blended wider rocker panels, and functional rear vents installed into the wide rear fenders. Offered in coupe and cabriolet variants, in 1987, the already substantial price tag of the standard 930 Turbo with the M505 option resulted in a sizable six figure invoice for a factory-built Slant Nose car. Rarely ordered due to the high cost, Porsche experts estimate that 609 third generation North American delivery Slant Nose cars were built at the factory with just 130 Cabriolet examples built in 1987.This particular example is a genuine Porsche factory built Slantnose (option code M505), completed in April of 1987. As recorded in the Carfax, the car was stolen in November 1990 and recovered approximately three weeks later. According to additional owner information and the current Carfax, this car spent much of its life in California, spanning 1990 to 2017, with the exception of a few months in Kansas in the summer of 2007. The current owner purchased the car from Fantasy Junction in 2017 and has used it sparingly, consistent with the low miles which have accumulated to the current 39,164 miles indicated. While additional records of accumulated miles are not available from early ownership, the miles recorded are chronologically consistent as reported in the recent Carfax.Today this factory-built Slant Nose Porsche 930 presents in excellent condition featuring a repaint performed some years ago in Guards Red applied over the metal factory body panels. Although the paint shows some imperfections, light marks, and typical road chips on the forward-facing surfaces, the finish remains satisfying overall. The rubber and various black trim are in very good to excellent condition throughout the car with the exception of the black trimmed lower front valance edge which displays minor scuff marks. The stance is perfectly positioned on correct and desirable 7 and 9-inch Fuchs wheels, which feature matching recessed painted red areas, accented by polished aluminum rims and wheel petals. A set of Toyo Proxes tires are fitted at the rear with Bridgestone Potenzas mounted on the front. The glass, lenses, and lights are in excellent condition as are the various black trim throughout the car. The power convertible top is serviceable, showing evidence of use, but raises and lowers manually, fits properly, and latches correctly. The black top is finished with a flexible rear plastic window which has fogged over time, but folds into the rear pocket when the top is lowered. When the top is lowered it can be covered with a nicely trimmed matching black top boot. The 930 rear spoiler is in excellent condition including the black rubber trim surrounding the air intake. The black side vents are uniquely constructed from wood, owing to the need for lower volume production. Unlike non-factory molded plastic units, these rare wood pieces are yet another desirable and tell-tale trait of factory built M505 Slant Nose cars.The black leather interior remains in very good condition with materials and surfaces that appear consistent with cars of this age and accumulated miles. The leather seats show minimal use, with some wear evident to the driver’s side bolster. The rear seating area appears to have been largely unused, with smoothly hinging rear seatbacks, showing excellent finishes both front and back. The door panels are in excellent condition with a slight sag in the driver’s side arm rest lid. The center console houses a 4-speed manual fitted with a black shifter boot and black trim. The original carpets are in very good condition, showing some areas of use in typical places, but otherwise very much in keeping with the low miles indicated, protected by a matching set of “Turbo” embroidered floor mats. The dashboard, switches, iconic black-dial instruments with orange needles, and analog controls are excellent and correct, consistent with the low miles indicated. The top of the dashboard appears to have been refinished with a nicely trimmed though not factory correct material. The engine compartment is representative of correct features and details consistent with 930 series Porsches. The engine is unstamped, which is generally indicative of engine blocks supplied as factory replacements. Though the origin of the replacement is undocumented, the condition and components are generally stock in appearance and operation. The front storage compartment remains stock with correct full Perlon carpet and a date coded spare tire indicating March 1987, consistent with the manufacturing period for this car. Underneath the car, there is only mild evidence of road use and no indication of structural damage or compromise to the floor or major components.The car starts easily, idles well, and pulls on boost. The chassis, steering, and suspension are in good order and the brakes respond well. The gearbox shifts as it should, and the clutch takes up properly with smooth operation.
