Privatized in 1986, Alfa Romeo received large investments and eventually restructured. Under the command of the Fiat Group, it was determined the development of new models to rescue the prestige of the brand: among them the curious ES-30 coupe, better known by the acronym SZ (Sprint Zagato) or, in this case, RZ (Roadster Zagato).

Based on the Alfa Romeo 75, this experimental model with a 3.0 engine was created at Fiat's Centro Stilo in collaboration with Zagato and designer Antonio Castellana. The brutal and futuristic style exploited the use of panels of synthetic material and thermoplastic, causing a furor in the Geneva hall when it was presented in 1989, receiving the nickname “Il Mostro”. With such aggressiveness, the space inside ended up suffering restrictions with the two fixed seats, leaving the driver to adjust the steering column. The inter-axle mass distribution is favored by the front mid-engine and rear-mounted box with auto-locking as standard, DeDion rear suspension and disc brakes integrated inside the axle shafts.

Only 278 RZ were built: 50 in 1992 and 228 in 1993. Like the SZ, the RZ was sold and distributed throughout Italy mainly by enthusiasts and specialists rather than through official Alfa Romeo channels, making this an even more difficult model to build. find these days.
