Description

The Austin Cooper S 1071 is one of the most iconic motorsport models of the 1960s. Developed by Austin in collaboration with tuner John Cooper , the Cooper S was created to take the small British utility vehicle into the world of competition. Thanks to its low weight, excellent agility, and highly effective handling, it quickly distinguished itself in rallies, circuits, and hill climbs throughout Europe, becoming a true icon of motorsport.

This example, from August 1963 , is presented in the original Smoke Grey combination with an Old English White roof and has a highly relevant sporting history. Driven by Manuel Lopes Gião , it won 1st place overall in the 14th Volta a Portugal in 1963 , one of the most important national motorsport events of the time. In 1964 it continued to excel, achieving 1st place overall in the Madrid International Circuit , 2nd place overall in the Cascais Circuit , 3rd place overall in Montes Claros , 1st place overall in the Pena Hillclimb , and 1st place overall in Vila do Conde . Internationally, it also finished 2nd in the Juan Jover Trophy , held in Barcelona .

In 2004 , this Austin Cooper S underwent a complete restoration , strictly respecting its original specifications. The body was restored and painted in its original color at Raimundo Branco 's workshops , while the remaining work was carried out at Historic Garage by Antero Pereira . The entire process is documented in a book that accompanies the car , which records the different phases of the restoration as well as its racing history.

The Austin Cooper S 1071 was equipped with a 1069 cc inline 4-cylinder engine , producing around 70 horsepower , coupled with a 4-speed manual gearbox . It also featured front disc brakes , reduced weight, and an extremely agile chassis, characteristics that made this model a benchmark in 1960s racing, allowing it to reach speeds of around 160 km/h .

With a proven competitive history, documented restoration, and original configuration , this Austin Cooper S 1071 represents a very special piece for any classic and racing car collection.
