The GT3 MK1 is the first GT3 ever built, it was developed to race on the competitions GT3 FIA category, it is really important for features as:
- Mezger engine dry sump with GT1 and 962 origin with crankcase 964/993.
- Last Porsche hand made from the Motorsport factory at Weissach.
- First car with street roll cage (standard for Clubsport version).

The first GT3 is an icon also for the production numbers of only 1.858 units including 400 Clubsport version, considering the total production of 175.262 Porsche 996. A comparison is the Carrera 2.7 RS built in 1.590 units compared to 111.995 pre bumpers.
