Description

This magnificent prewar Special is probably one of the most spectacular machines we ever had in our inventory. The car is based on a Packard Eight from 1925 with 319 ci. engine (5,2 litre) and eight cilinders in line. The chassis is shortened and fitted with a hand made full aluminium body inspired by the famous Packard Cable racecars from the twenties.

We purchased the car from a private collection in Switzerland, as we were impressed by the look and great proportions of this beautifully made Special. We decided to get it completely restored and improved by famous Dutch prewar specialist Bas Jansen with the aim to create a perfect twenties sportscar which can be used on the road for events or just for fun. In the end, it took 1,5 years to get the car to this great actual condition, as there was a lot of work to be done. Apart from a complete engine rebuilt, the Packard also received lots of improvements on the suspension, a revised steering box, overhauled brake system and a new electrical wiring loom. Inside, the seats were inclined and improved to create a more comfortable driving position. The dashboard is rebuilt from scratch, and the footwells were enlarged. New 21" wire wheels painted gloss black with fantastic Blockley 6.75/7.00-21 tyres were fitted, and a spare wheel was added as well. Also a tonneau cover was made, and the steering wheel is now detachable to improve entering the car. This restoration is fully documented with hundreds of pictures and many detailed invoices. Once finished, the Packard went through technical control without a single remark, and has now a Belgian road registration.

Driving this beast is a bit of an experience. The huge straight-eight engine produces a fantastic sound (comparable with a prewar fighter plane !), as it only has one small silencer. The engine was dynoed at 110 bhp after the rebuild, which make it a rather fast car for its age. The paint and leather are beautifully patinated, and so is the inside and engine compartiment of the car. It really looks like it is still in original paint and straight out of a barn, but it is actually completely restored.

If you are looking for a proper one-off prewar sportscar which is ready to use, then this may be the one you want. It looks and sounds spectacular, and offers the most entertaining driving experience. It is not a cheap car, but real value for money considering the quality and performance. Now available for viewing and testing in our showroom, and ready to put a big grin on your face.
