– Delivered new by Mercedes-Benz of Miami on 19 February 2009
– Finished in Iridium Silver Metallic over 'Exclusive' black leather interior
– Accident free, extensively documented, collector-grade condition

Daytona Automobil presents a 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG Black Series, one of the most extreme and mechanically re-engineered AMG models ever produced. With only 17,000 km, strong documentation, and highly original condition, this example represents one of the most serious modern AMG collector cars available in todays market.

This car was delivered new by Mercedes-Benz of Miami on 19 February 2009 to a Mr. Edgar Azrale, and remarkably retains even its original pre-delivery inspection documentation. It comes with all books, manuals, and an extensive file of supporting paperwork. The car has no accident history. The front reflectors have been removed and painted over, which required repainting of the front bumper. According to our report, the remainder of the car retains its factory original paint.

Finished in Iridium Silver Metallic over an 'Exclusive' black leather interior, this is arguably one of the most appropriate and timeless specifications for the model. The interior is equipped with multi-contour seats and the AMG Performance steering wheel with perforated leather, maintaining a purposeful yet refined environment consistent with the car’s character.

The SL 65 Black Series occupies a unique position within AMG history. Although it carries the Black Series badge, its engineering philosophy places it closer to cars such as the CLK DTM AMG and even the CLK GTR than to the rest of the Black Series lineup.

The dimensional changes alone tell the story. A typical Black Series model is on average 64 mm wider than its base counterpart. The SL 65 Black Series is 140 mm wider than a standard SL. More than double the typical formula. For comparison:

C 63 Black Series +109 mm
CLK 63 Black Series +94 mm
SLS Black Series +26 mm
AMG GT Black Series +16 mm
SLK 55 Black Series +0 mm

Only the doors are shared with the standard SL. The retractable hardtop was removed and replaced with a fixed carbon-fibre roof. The platform was fundamentally re-engineered to handle 1000 Nm of torque and to deliver a driving experience entirely different from the hydraulic, grand touring character of the regular SL.

Power comes from the 6.0-litre twin-turbocharged V12, producing 670 hp and 1000 Nm. In 2009, these figures were extraordinary. Even today, they remain formidable. AMG, together with HWA, developed a completely revised chassis with coilover suspension, adjustable settings, and a multi-disc limited-slip differential with up to 40 percent locking effect. The result is a far more mechanical and direct driving experience than any contemporary Mercedes-AMG road car. MotorTrend famously described it as a “cruise missile,” a fitting characterization of its brutal acceleration and stability.

Production was limited to 350 cars worldwide, with 175 allocated to the US market, each numbered on the gear selector. This level of production places it close to hypercar territorys. It is also believed that only four examples are registered in Sweden, underlining its rarity in this region.

What makes the SL 65 Black Series particularly compelling is that it breaks the established Black Series pattern. It is not a sharpened variant of a base car; it is a heavily re-engineered machine with bespoke bodywork, fixed roof, dramatically widened stance, and drivetrain modifications that fundamentally alter its character. From a technical standpoint, it shares more DNA with AMG’s limited-production halo cars than with the rest of the Black Series family.

This particular example presents exactly as a serious collector would want: low mileage, clean and documented history, correct specification, and strong cosmetic condition. Iridium Silver over black Exclusive leather suits the model’s aggressive yet understated presence perfectly.

The SL 65 AMG Black Series is an outlier in the lineage and arguably the most extreme reinterpretation of a Mercedes platform to carry the Black Series name.
