The elegant styling and undeniable appeal of the Mercedes-Benz 230 SL “Pagoda” made the German two-seater popular at the time of its first availability in the 1960s, and its long-lasting charm has sustained demand as a coveted collector car since then. First introduced in 1963 as the 230 SL, the new-generation W113 Mercedes roadster was designed by Paul Braq. The model earned its Pagoda nickname thanks to the distinctive concave removeable hardtop that owners could equip for all-weather driving. The W113 established the blueprint for nearly all future SL models, combining luxurious trimmings, impeccably sophisticated style, and engineering excellence in a motorcar meant to deliver its occupants safely, rapidly, and in unrivaled comfort and style.

The series’ introductory 230 SL model featured a 2.3-liter inline six-cylinder engine which was equipped with fuel injection. Its four-speed automatic transmission had a generous rear-axle ratio perfect for comfortable, high-speed cruising. In total, Mercedes-Benz produced nearly 20,000 examples between March 1963 and January 1967.

Acquired by the consignor in 2006, this Grey Beige over black 230 SL is one of just 185 examples produced during the 1967 model year. Documentation on file shows that the car was delivered new to California in November 1967 and remained there until 1999, then indicating just shy of 22,000 miles.

In the past 15 years of careful ownership, this remarkable Pagoda has traveled fewer than 1,500 miles and presently indicates fewer than 33,600 actual miles on its odometer. Under the consignor’s care, the car has been mechanically maintained as needed with a particular focus on originality, with work solely executed by reputable marque specialists.

The black interior upholstery and delicate chrome trim are exceptionally fresh and tidy, as are the matching square weave-carpets. A matching convertible soft top rendered in black fabric tucks nicely into the boot when not in use. In addition to its eminence as a rare, late-production example of the 230 SL, this particular chassis has also been desirably equipped with a Blaupunkt radio, automatic transmission, power brakes, and Frigiking air conditioning system.

This 1967 230 SL is now accompanied by a set of manuals, sales literature, spare wheel, matching Pagoda hardtop, and a copy of its factory data card. This rare and striking 230 SL can be enjoyed at Mercedes-Benz concours events, where it is sure to be appreciated, or all-weather road trips travelling in supreme comfort.

RM Sotheby’s is pleased to note that upon further inspection, this lot’s engine number matches that of the factory data card. Additionally, this lot is presented in its factory-correct color of Grey Beige (716). This vehicle is now offered without reserve.
