The Mercedes G Wagon was first introduced to the general public in 1979, having proved itself as a rugged four-wheel drive military vehicle. The G-Wagon was initially the idea of the Shah of Iran, a major shareholder in Mercedes-Benz at the time. Production started with collaboration between Mercedes- Benz and Styer Puch an Austrian off road specialist. Available as either a long or short wheelbase, it was built on a rugged ladder chassis and used permanent 4 – wheel drive system. Unlike its competitors, it boasted fully lockable differentials, meaning it was possible for all four wheels to turn independently. Powered buy a range of petrol and diesel engines it was soon adopted as a credible competitor to the Range-Rover. The post ’90 G’s were definitely luxurious, but they weren’t quick, and its esoteric customer base started noticing. Mercedes’ solution was simple – hand it over to in-house tuners, AMG. Subsequently, it squeezed in a range of V8 petrol engines including the 5.0 litre V8 engine which produced a healthy 292 bhp giving the G Wagon impressive performance. Other notable specification upgrades included electronically controlled traction system 4ETS, the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) and three differential locks selectable at the push of a button, permanent all-wheel drive with off-road ratio and a 7 seven-speed automatic transmission.

With demand exploding for personalised high performance derivatives, it was only a matter of time before Brabus the specialist German car tuning company turned its attention to the G Wagon.

The Brabus G800 Widestar is based on the Mercedes G65 with Brabus breathing heavily on the engine, making it the worlds most powerful off-roader. Powered by 6.5 litre twelve-cylinder bi-turbo high capacity engine rated at 800hp the G800 is capable of 0-60mph in a staggering 4.1 secs and onto a limited top speed of 150mph.
