Trade-in car.

*Some cars don’t just appear in the history books, they live in them*
And this 1955 Mercedes-Benz 220 S is exactly that kind of car. A true “Ponton,” a time capsule from the era in which Mercedes was reshaping the post-war automotive landscape. And the best part? This example remains in remarkably original condition. Authentic, complete, mechanically well cared for—and most importantly: running and driving. Yes, it has been used, not hidden away.

In 1953, Mercedes-Benz introduced an entirely new generation of models featuring what they called unitary construction—a unibody design with large box-section side frames. That construction gave these models their nickname: “Ponton.” It marked a modern, forward-looking step, paired with engineering Mercedes was already renowned for: fully independent suspension all around, and on this generation a newly developed rear axle. Remarkably advanced for its time.

The first inline-six Pontons, such as the 220a debuting in 1954, immediately proved that Mercedes was reinventing this segment. But the 220a’s production run was short. In 1956 the 220 S arrived—more powerful, more elegant, more refined. Exactly the model we are presenting here.

Under the long, graceful hood sits a 2,195 cc overhead-cam inline-six. In its early form it produced roughly 100 hp, later 106 hp. Modest on paper, but in practice wonderfully smooth, silky power delivery. The 220 S reached about 100 mph and did 0–60 mph in roughly 17 seconds. But truthfully, this car isn’t about numbers.

This car is about feel. And that feel is everywhere in this example:
– The bodywork remains delightfully authentic with beautiful original details
– Mechanically well maintained
– Complete, original, functional
– And fully drivable

Yes, it shows use. Yes, it bears signs of its life. But that is precisely what makes it so charming: you get to decide whether to restore it or simply enjoy it as it is. A “driving project,” as we like to say. The kind of classic that welcomes you rather than intimidates you. A car that doesn’t force you into a choice, but invites you to make one.
