Description
Produced in Modena on 10 June 1966, this Maserati Mistral Spyder 3.7 is more than a rare specification - it offers a glimpse into the final chapter of Maserati’s coachbuilt era, when cars were still shaped by hand, one panel at a time, rather than assembled by automated rhythm.
One of just 46 cars fitted with the 3.7-litre engine, and one of only around 124 Spyders built in total.
It is easy to imagine it outside the Hotel du Cap or paused at a lakeside café in Como, its red coachwork catching the late afternoon sun. Designed by Pietro Frua, the Mistral blends proportion and restraint with unmistakable Italian flair. The long bonnet and tapering tail give it a sense of motion even at rest, while the contrast of red paintwork and white Connolly leather adds a touch of theatre.
Originally delivered in June 1966 to its first owner, John Cuccio in Westport, Connecticut (USA), it left the factory as a European version - complete with kilometre and Celsius gauges. The “Europa” specification is among the most desirable today, not least because these cars were equipped with manual window winders rather than electric motors, reflecting the purist approach of the time.
Today, chassis #599 presents in rosso metallizzato with its original white Connolly leather interior, a new beige soft-top including cover and sunshade, and five Borrani wire wheels. It has the original Becker Europa radio and the factory mounting points for safety belts (installed), correctly installed in the chassis tunnel and soft-top compartment in matching interior colours.
The cars total mileage now around 115,000 km. It has been consistently maintained and recently received significant mechanical attention, including a ZF gearbox overhaul, engine check, and new clutch. The original interior remains in excellent condition and has been professionally detailed.
Power comes from Maserati’s twin-spark inline-six with Lucas fuel injection, producing 245 PS through a five-speed manual gearbox. Its sound is unmistakable - mechanical clarity rather than noise - and the driving experience remains wonderfully analog and authentic.
Included with the car is a grey factory-style hardtop, beautifully preserved and a perfect fit. Only around 40 hardtops were supplied by the factory, making this a particularly rare configuration.
This Mistral Spyder “runs on the button” and is technically faultless. It holds a Swiss veteran status (10/2022).
This is not a car that has been merely collected - it has been lived with, cherished, and maintained with care. Now ready for its next chapter, it awaits a discerning enthusiast who appreciates the blend of elegance, rarity, and mechanical purity that defines Maserati’s golden era.
