For the 2012 model year, Ford finally brought back the vaunted Boss 302 name from the archives for a new Mustang model that was true to its heritage.
The new Boss 302 V-8 engine shared the same displacement as its predecessor but was a wholly modern unit with double overhead cams, churning out 444 bhp and 380 lb/ft of torque, mated to a six-speed manual transmission and Torsen limited-slip rear differential, and enabling a rush to 60 mph in only 4.1 seconds. This performance was matched by stiffer adjustable suspension, beefier sway bars, and revised traction and stability programming. Buyers could further select the aptly named Laguna Seca package, which added Alcantara-trimmed Recaro bucket seats and replaced the rear seat with a chassis brace – creating a track-focused two-seater machine that was nonetheless still streetable. Reportedly, only 767 Boss 302 Laguna Seca models were built in 2012.
Jim Taylor acquired his Boss 302 Laguna Seca from Carbone Ford-Lincoln of Rome, New York, in July 2011 as a nearly-new car with 916 miles. He has since fitted an aftermarket chin spoiler and enjoyed driving the Mustang with his typical enthusiasm, and at the time of cataloging, it remained in excellent overall condition, with 6,181 miles recorded. It is accompanied by a service and history file, including the original window sticker, purchase paperwork, and maintenance documentation, as well as the second TracKey, unleashing maximum performance, and the original front chin spoiler.
This is a surpassingly exciting collectible modern Mustang, offering thrills that are still remarkable a decade after it was built – the perfect companion to an original Boss 302 in one's collection.
