Description

One of the most courageous actions undertaken by a major American automaker in recent memory was Ford's bold re-introduction of its famed GT40 in the early 2000s. Now known as the Ford GT, the new car was a fully modern supercar, meticulously engineered to be one of the best in the world – but at the same time, was extraordinarily faithful externally to the design of the original four-time consecutive Le Mans-winning titan. It was one of the rare moments when, rather than compromising, an automaker gave its public what they wanted, a no-compromises performance machine that could and did succeed on both road and track.

In keeping with that spirit, for 2006 Ford made its 550 bhp, V-8-powered, Ferrari-beating GT available with a special new Heritage Paint Livery package. Production code GL PO, this package, alone priced at over $13,000, applied to one's car the most famous color scheme in racing, Heritage Blue and Heritage Orange, the memorable colors used by the John Wyer Automotive/Gulf Oil-sponsored GT40, no. 1075, that was victorious at Le Mans in 1968 and 1969. Roundels were also provided on the GT's flanks, hood, and decklid of course, for the racing number of one's choosing, usually a lucky number or birthday. The result happily aped the original winning car, and created both the visual and tactile illusion of enjoying a Le Mans winner on the street!

As it was offered only for the original GT's second and final season of production, the Heritage car was a one-year-wonder, limiting its numbers significantly to just 343 examples. Practically instantly upon its introduction, the Heritage GT became the one to own, as no other more successfully evoked the spirit of its predecessor. It has remained the most sought-after variant ever since, with examples remaining continuously desirable, even since the introduction of the second-generation Ford GT. On the current market it is one of the hottest of all supercars.

Jim Taylor, a devoted fan of performance Fords since the Total Performance era of the 1960s, bought his GT from Gwinnett Place Ford of Duluth, Georgia, on January 14, 2006, becoming the very first private owner. It had been redirected to that showroom from Courtesy Ford of Elizabeth City, North Carolina, the original dealer listed on its window sticker, which accompanies the car. The same window sticker clearly notes selection of all four available GT options – the Heritage Paint Livery with racing stripe, grey-painted brake calipers, lightweight BBS forged aluminum wheels, and McIntosh A/FM/CD stereo. All other accessories came as standard equipment.

The GT has been lovingly preserved by Mr. Taylor since his acquisition, alongside his GT350s and Cobras as a prized possession which he accurately assumed would become a significant collector's item. One of very few GTs of any livery to still remain in their original private ownership, it remains in essentially 'new' and unused condition throughout, exquisitely kept both inside and out, and at the time of cataloguing had recorded, rather remarkably, only 4.5 actual miles. This is almost certainly one of the lowest-mileage Heritage GTs extant, and possibly the closest one can come to acquiring a 'new' example. In addition to the aforementioned window sticker, it is accompanied by additional delivery paperwork and a dealer handbook, as well as the original hang tags and all other accessories, virtually recreating the experience of buying one 'new' in 2006.

Every supercar enthusiast today is seeking the very best available 2006 Ford GT Heritage. In provenance, condition, and, especially, in its unbelievably low mileage, this is it. There is absolutely no comparison.
