Description

Ferrari Dino 206 GT 1968
Italian Delivery · Alloy Body · 1 of 152

The Dino 206 GT Experience

The Dino 206 GT represents the purest and most technically uncompromised expression of the Dino concept. Lighter, sharper, and more race-bred than its successor, the 246, it embodies Ferrari’s late-1960s engineering philosophy at its most focused.

With its all-aluminium body, short wheelbase, and 2.0-litre all-alloy V6 producing 180 bhp, the 206 GT delivers a driving experience that is markedly more delicate and responsive than later models. Steering is lighter and more communicative, the chassis more eager, and the engine note higher-pitched and more urgent. It is a car defined by balance, precision, and mechanical intimacy, rather than outright speed.

Produced for little more than a year and in extremely limited numbers, the Dino 206 GT is widely regarded as the connoisseur’s Dino.

Model Significance & Technical Distinction

Built between 1967 and 1969, the Dino 206 GT was Ferrari’s first mid-engined road car and the only Dino to feature a fully aluminium body. Total production amounted to just 152 coupés, all European specification, chassis numbers 00102–00410.

Key features unique to the 206 GT include:

- All-aluminium bodywork (later 246 models were steel)
- Shorter wheelbase, enhancing agility and turn-in
- 2.0-litre all-alloy V6, 180 bhp
- Rudge knock-off wheels with straight-eared spinners
- Thin bumpers and lighter exterior trim
- External fuel filler cap, unique to the 206
- Six engine-lid louvers per side (seven on the 246)
- Girling brake calipers (eight on the 246)
- Painted aluminium dashboard panel
- Black-painted cam covers
- Unique transmission shift knob with resin-embedded shift pattern
- Firewall-mounted headrests
- Passenger footrest / grab handle
- Centre-console-mounted climate controls
- 380 mm wooden steering wheel
- 185 VR15 tyres

Early interior trim details, including distinctive vinyl grain and cloth seat inserts with terry-style texture, further differentiate the 206 GT from later production.

Notably, early cars carried minimal Ferrari branding, reflecting the model’s original positioning. In period, the only visible Ferrari marking was often limited to the air-filter cover plate.

Delivery, History & Documentation

Based on factory records, registry correspondence, period documentation, and surviving materials, the following history of this Dino 206 GT is known and documented.

Chassis 00150 was delivered new in Italy in November 1968 to Dino Ravasio & Figli, Verona, finished in its original and highly desirable specification of Rosso Chiaro Ferrari (ref. 20-R-190) over Nero 161 with Panno Rosso (red cloth seat inserts). This specification is confirmed by registry correspondence and aligns with the car as presented today (to the exception of red cloth seat inserts).

The car was originally registered in Rome in 1968 and retains its original Italian black number plates, Roma F20552, a rare and evocative feature that significantly enhances historical presence and authenticity. In 1997 bought by Franco T. (Roma, Italy) . Correspondence with Dino historian and registry authority Matthias Bartz confirms that by 2005 the car was owned by Claudio S. (Italy). While a complete uninterrupted ownership chain is not available, all known custodians appear to have been knowledgeable enthusiasts, with no inconsistencies within the documented timeline.

The car was acquired by the current Belgian owner in 2016, under whose stewardship it has been carefully preserved and responsibly maintained, with a clear emphasis on originality and mechanical correctness.

The Dino is accompanied by a strong and highly relevant documentation set, including:

- “Uso e Manutenzione” owner’s handbook
- "Ricambi" (spare parts catalogue)
- A period correct copy of the original Italian black Roma number plates
- Ferrari Classiche letter dated 2016 with original factory specifications (signed Michel Rayneri)
- Dino Expert correspondence confirming delivery details and original specification
- Italian libretto (copy dated 15/10/1997)
- Matching-number identification photographs of engine and gearbox
- Invoices and records for recent works carried out

Service History & Works Carried Out

The car benefits from documented professional maintenance, including a recent and comprehensive major service, ensuring it is mechanically sorted while fully respecting originality.

An invoice on file details a thorough mechanical overhaul performed during winter 2023, including:

- Full engine service with replacement of all fluids
- Removal, overhaul, and refitting of Weber carburettors
- Cooling system overhaul, including water pump and thermostat replacement
- Brake system overhaul, with front and rear caliper revision and replacement of flexible and rigid brake lines
- Fuel system service, including tank cleaning and replacement of hoses
- Suspension inspection, with replacement of bearings and joints where required
- Clutch cable replacement
- Radiator and oil-cooler servicing
- Extensive parts renewal and 38 hours of specialist labour

This work ensures the Dino is mechanically correct, properly sorted, and ready for use, without compromising its originality or period character.

Condition

This Dino 206 GT presents as a high-quality, authentic example, retaining the delicate proportions and mechanical character that define the model. The aluminium bodywork displays correct panel definition and lightness, while mechanical components reflect careful, informed ownership rather than cosmetic over-restoration.

Interior trim retains correct early-production details, reinforcing the car’s originality and period accuracy.

Currently holds a Belgian road registration.

Collectability & Market Position

With just 152 examples produced, the Dino 206 GT is rarer than most contemporary Ferrari V12 road cars and significantly rarer than the later 246 GT.

It occupies a unique position as:

- Ferrari’s first mid-engined road car
- The only alloy-bodied Dino
- The lightest and most agile Dino
- A model with strong philosophical and technical links to Ferrari’s racing programme

As the market increasingly distinguishes true first-series Ferraris, the 206 GT has emerged as the ultimate connoisseur’s Dino. Correctly specified, Italian-delivery examples with matching numbers, original details, and credible documentation are now firmly established among the most desirable post-war Ferraris.

This example, the 28th Dino ever produced, with its original configuration, Italian black plates, documented history, and comprehensive recent mechanical works, represents an exceptional opportunity to acquire one of the most historically important and mechanically rewarding Ferraris ever produced.
