Heart skips a beat
Commissioned in 1967 to celebrate Emil Mosbacher’s America’s Cup victory with The Intrepid, the Heuer Carrera Skipper reference 7754 took cues from the winning yacht in its dial design. Featuring light green, as per the deck — the most effective colour to absorb sun reflection — and orange and dark green, like the ropes that pulled the vessel to victory, as well as the dark blue hue of the sea, the 7754 was nicknamed the ‘Skipperera’, as it was the only Skipper model with the original 35mm Carrera case. Now, to mark the 50th anniversary of this victory, Tag Heuer has partnered with Hodinkee to co-design a new limited-edition model. Retaining the distinctive tri-colour regatta countdown dial, the Carrera case (now slightly larger at 39mm), and the 1960s lugs, the new edition adds a date complication à la Heuer Carrera ‘Dato 45’ and is powered by an automatic calibre 18 movement. Limited to only 125 pieces, the Tag Heuer Skipper Limited Edition for Hodinkee retails at 5,900 US dollars and includes three straps (blue leather, grey NATO, and orange NATO). Each example will have its limited-edition number on the ring of the sapphire caseback, and as less than 20 examples of the original ‘Skipperera’ are thought be produced, and only a handful are still remaining, this limited-edition retro-reissue is one not to miss…
