Our 10 highlights from the Phillips Geneva Watch Auction

Phillips’ Start Stop Reset sale might be stealing all the headlines, but the following day’s Geneva Watch Auction Three deserves as much, if not more recognition for its exquisite 108-lot catalogue…

Taking place on Sunday 15 May in Geneva, the Phillips Geneva Watch Auction Three features a diverse selection of superb watches, from hallowed Rolexes to a near-unobtainable Omega.

If the combination of small, unguarded crown and beguiling aged ‘tropical’ dial of the 1958 Tudor Oyster Prince Submariner (est. 25,000-50,000 CHF) – Tudor’s first purpose-built diver’s watch and, incidentally, a clear inspiration for the brand’s latest Heritage Black Bay model – doesn’t enchant you, perhaps the elegant 1953 yellow-gold Omega Synchrobeat will? One of only 17 believed to remain after the notoriously unreliable model was recalled and destroyed or broken for parts, it’s estimated at an according 15,000-25,000 CHF. We almost mistook the 1953 Rolex Turn-O-Graph (12,000-18,000 CHF) for an early Omega Seamaster thanks to its extra-thin bezel, while the very early A-Series Audemars Piguet Royal Oak featuring the ‘Khanjar’ daggers of Oman (60,000-100,000 CHF) on its dial would certainly make for a memorable present. You can find the full catalogue for the sale – and that for the preceding Start Stop Reset sale – listed in the Classic Driver Market.
