Snapshot, 1988: The colourful birds (and bulls) of Imola

Sharp sunglasses, trendy jackets, macho beards – Valentino Balboni and Keke Rosberg are certainly the coolest cats in the paddock at Imola, ahead of the 1988 San Marino Grand Prix. We’d love to know which car keys they’re concealing in those jackets…

It’s probably safe to assume that Balboni will be returning to Sant’Agata by raging bull after the race, but what of the former Formula 1 world champion Keke Rosberg? He is a renowned Lamborghini enthusiast, so we like to think he’ll be slipping into a Countach or a ‘Rambo Lambo’ LM002. He won’t be racing today, having hung up his driving gloves in 1986, four years after his title win. So while Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna and Nelson Piquet will be duking it out on the track, this duo will no doubt be discussing the long-awaited successor to the Countach, codenamed project P132. Little does Rosberg know that, in three years’ time, he’ll collect his new, bright yellow Lamborghini Diablo from the factory. Let’s hope he’s still got the sports jacket to match…
