Among the most influential 20th century fashion designers, André Courrèges can legitimately be attributed with changing the way women dressed in the 1960s. His characteristic Space Age style was unmistakeable — he even claimed to have invented the miniskirt, although the point is a contentious one. Alas, as is the way with fashion, the 1970s heralded a new era of sartorial style — one that forgot the last as quickly as it took grip. Dismayed but undeterred, Courrèges dipped his toes into new worlds, such as perfume and sculpture… oh, and a momentary foray into car design. The Mercedes-Benz G-Class with which Courrèges was given free rein to do as he wished is unmistakably ‘him’. It’s silver, for starters, with bold white, pink, and chrome trim, and there’s a yellow spotlight on the roof that looks like something off the Moon rover.
