Snapshot, 1980: Winter is coming and André Courrèges has the answer

It’s 1980 in La Courneuve, Paris, and with his characteristic women’s couture long out of fashion, renowned designer André Courrèges is turning his hand to other projects, including this Mercedes-Benz G-Class, which he’s fully customised in his own inimitable way…

Among the most influential 20th century fashion designers, André Courrèges can legitimately be attributed with changing the way women dressed in the 1960s. His characteristic Space Age style was unmistakeable — he even claimed to have invented the miniskirt, although the point is a contentious one. Alas, as is the way with fashion, the 1970s heralded a new era of sartorial style — one that forgot the last as quickly as it took grip. Dismayed but undeterred, Courrèges dipped his toes into new worlds, such as perfume and sculpture… oh, and a momentary foray into car design. The Mercedes-Benz G-Class with which Courrèges was given free rein to do as he wished is unmistakably ‘him’. It’s silver, for starters, with bold white, pink, and chrome trim, and there’s a yellow spotlight on the roof that looks like something off the Moon rover. At the car’s launch, he and his models have naturally dressed up for the occasion — unless they know something about the impending winter that we don’t…
