Snapshot, 1972: It’s all smiles at Team Stewart

It’s 1972, and on the grid prior to the 1972 Six Hours of Paul Ricard, a jovial Jackie Stewart and his wife Helen have plenty to smile about…

The famous couple is proudly showing off their matching crash helmets, featuring the band of Royal Stewart tartan and bright red gender symbols. But contrary to how it appears, Stewart won’t be partnered by his childhood sweetheart for the race, rather his Tyrell Formula 1 teammate François Cevert. Lured to the European Touring Car Championship by lucrative sponsorship and starting/prize money – and not least the chance to partner his teammate in the dominant Works Ford Cologne Capri – the reigning Formula 1 World Champion looks relaxed. Though the forthcoming race won’t go exactly to plan, he and Cevert will still perch atop the second step on the podium once the six hours are up.
