Beschreibung

The 2004 Audi RS6 C5 Cosworth V8, first introduced in 2002, marked a historic turning point for the German brand by becoming the very first RS6 ever produced and one of the most impressive super‑estates (and sedans) ever built. Based on the C5‑generation Audi A6, this model was developed by quattro GmbH (now Audi Sport) and positioned itself as the pinnacle of the brand’s high‑performance family cars, capable of rivaling the best sports cars of its era. It combined luxury, all‑wheel drive, and brutal performance — something very few competitors could offer in the early 2000s.

At its heart was an extraordinary 4.2‑liter biturbo V8, developed in collaboration with Cosworth, which elevated the RS6 to a new level within Audi’s lineup. This engine produced 450 hp and 560 Nm of torque — remarkable figures for the early 2000s — and was paired with a reinforced 5‑speed Tiptronic automatic transmission designed to handle the massive torque output. The asymmetric quattro all‑wheel‑drive system ensured outstanding grip, while the DRC (Dynamic Ride Control) — an innovative technology at the time — reduced body roll in corners without relying on electronics, thanks to a hydraulically interconnected damper system.

Performance was impressive: around 4.7 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h, making it faster than many sports coupés of its time, despite being a nearly 2‑ton family estate. Top speed was electronically limited to 250 km/h, although many examples were capable of exceeding 280 km/h.

Among its curiosities, the RS6 C5 was the last RS model to feature an engine developed in partnership with Cosworth, making it especially desirable among enthusiasts. Another interesting detail is that the model was assembled partly in Neckarsulm and partly in Győr, Hungary, due to the complexity of the engine.

Visually, the RS6 C5 stood out with its widened wheel arches, model‑specific bumpers, more aggressive air intakes, and exclusive wheels. The interior followed Audi’s discreet yet sporty philosophy: Recaro seats, carbon‑fiber trim, and model‑specific instrumentation. This understated aesthetic contributed to its reputation as a “stealth supercar.”

The legacy of the RS6 C5 is immense. It established the formula that still defines the RS6 today: a big engine, quattro traction, everyday usability, and supercar‑level performance. In many circles, it is considered one of the most charismatic RS models and one of the last to combine pure mechanics, brute force, and relatively little electronic intervention — qualities that give it a very special character within the Audi Sport universe.
