The Dino series of cars by Ferrari have been called some of the most beautiful mid-engined cars ever produced. With swooping body lines, aluminum alloy bodies, and fantastic sounding V6 engines, they are a testament to Ferrari's engineering and passion for cars other than their V12 counterparts, starting with the Dino 206 GT. With a 2.0L V6 engine, open headlights, seating for 2, with a low slung profile, the Dinos were instant successes. However, the story of the Dino is born out of trauma from Enzo Ferrari, losing his firstborn son and dedicating his son's name to the new Ferrari cars.

Alfredo Ferrari, nicknamed Dino, was Enzo Ferrari's first son, who became an automotive engineer and over his life developed a penchant for racing and designing V6 engines. However, Dino's life was cut drastically short and lived only to be 24 years old after suffering from muscular dystrophy. In order to honor his son, Enzo decided to build a series of road cars using a 2.0L 65° V6 engine with triple Weber 40 DCNF/1 2-barrel carburetors, and created the brand "Dino".

The Ferrari Dino 206GT, designed by Aldo Brovarone and Leonardo Fioravanti at Pininfarina and hand-built by Scaglietti, was a departure for Ferrari and was targeting those looking for a Porsche 911 alternative. Creating 178 horsepower and 138 lb-ft of torque routed to the rear wheels via a 5-speed manual transaxle, the Dino's balance was profound. Coupled with a lightweight aluminum body, independent suspension, disc brakes, Cromodora center lock magnesium wheels, and the first Ferrari sold with electronic ignition and direct rack-and-pinion steering, it was highly successful. With only approximately 152 examples built by Ferrari, they are exceedingly rare compared to the later 246GTs which were produced in mass numbers of approximately 3,570 examples.

This 1968 Ferrari Dino 206 GT is the 38th of approximately 152 total examples built and is just one of three to leave the Ferrari factory finished in the beautiful Nocciola Metallizzato paint, (Hazelnut metallic). Documented by Ferrari historian Marcel Massini in his report, this 206 GT was completed on October 1st, 1968 before being delivered new via Motor S.a.s. di Carla Allegreti e C. in Rome, Italy, optioned with black vinyl seats with red leather inserts. A Mrs. Silvia Fosani, a resident of Rome, Italy, was the Dino's first owner.

Over the course of 45 years the 206 GT has several caretakers, both in the United States and Japan. In 2016 a complete restoration of Dino 00176 was started where it began its return to its factory-delivered specification. The car was refinished in the factory-delivered Nocciola Metallizzato, with the interior receiving a similar level of attention that saw the seats reupholstered in black leather with red leather inserts, as well as the rest of the interior receiving new upholstery.

The mechanical systems were also restored, including the brake calipers, master cylinder and booster, the carburetors were rebuilt, suspension rebuilt, and the intake camshaft timing was adjusted. The clutch was also replaced during this time. During the restoration it was confirmed that the engine and transaxle are matching according to Marcel Massini's report. After almost a year of work, the Dino 206 GT was restored to its former factory-delivered specification, ready for its next adventure.

Upon arriving at Canepa, the 206 GT was a sight to behold. Being one of 152 examples built along with an extremely rare paint finish, this spec of Dino is a rarity even for Canepa. Shortly after, the car was entered into the "Canepa Difference" process, a system created by Canepa to inspect and adjust as necessary every mechanical system and cosmetic surfaces of a car to ensure its best presentation and mechanical ability. The Nocciola Metallizzato paint was given a complete multi-stage foam pad polish, enhancing the luster of the Ferrari-designed color. The interior was given a similar attention to detail, ensuring that all leather surfaces were cleaned, carpets were spotless, and glass was clear. Mechanically, the Dino is ready for any road trip or concours, test driven and represents as a healthy example of Ferrari.

When any kind of Ferrari production gets down into the low triple digits, you know that it's something special. And when its particular specification is in the single digits? Well, at that point you have a true gem in your hands. This 1968 Ferrari Dino 206 GT, spec'd in its wonderful Nocciola Metallizzato paint, bespoke leather interior, matching numbers engine and transaxle, and being one of 152 examples built and one of only 3 in this particular color, makes it to be one of the rarest spec'd Dino 206 GTs you might be able to find.
