**Freiheit auf vier Rädern – das letzte Karmann Ghia Cabriolet von 1974**
Mit dem Karmann Ghia will Volkswagen mehr aus dem Käfer machen. Es sind die Aufschwungsjahre nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg, das Publikum will nicht nur gewöhnliche Autos. Motor und Aufhängung des Käfers bieten sich für eine Weiterentwicklung insofern an, als damit der Preis niedrig bleibt. Die bei Ghia in Turin in Auftrag gegebene Karosserie sieht nach Sportwagen aus, ohne natürlich die Fahrleistungen eines solchen zu bieten. Denn das sei, bemerkt bereits die auto motor und sport in ihrem Test von 1956, gar nicht nötig. Den Kunden werde schliesslich "die Genugtuung geboten, ein Auto individueller Eleganz zu besitzen, das in seiner Linienführung zu den schönsten Kleinwagen gehört, die es gibt."
Nicht zuletzt die Amerikaner mögen den kompakten Karmann Ghia, vor allem natürlich als Cabriolet. Kim Novak fährt einen in Alfred Hitchcocks Thriller VERTIGO von 1958, Brad Pitt tut es ihr in ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD von 2019 gleich.
Der hier angebotene Karmann wird ursprünglich ebenso in die USA ausgeliefert, er ist ein spätes Exemplar, das 1972 vom Band läuft. Unterdessen ist er teilrestauriert und auf europäische Spezifikationen umgebaut.
**Freedom on Four Wheels – The Final Karmann Ghia Cabriolet of 1974**
With the Karmann Ghia, Volkswagen aimed to take the Beetle to the next level. In the post-war boom years, buyers wanted more than just practical transportation. The Beetle's reliable engine and suspension made it an ideal foundation for a more stylish vehicle—while keeping costs low.
The bodywork, designed by Carrozzeria Ghia in Turin, offers the look of a sports car—without necessarily delivering the performance of one. But that was never the point. As auto motor und sport noted in its 1956 review: “The customer gains the satisfaction of owning a car of individual elegance—one of the most beautiful small cars in existence.”
Americans in particular took to the compact Karmann Ghia—especially in its cabriolet version. Kim Novak drove one in Alfred Hitchcock’s 1958 thriller Vertigo, and Brad Pitt followed suit in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019).
The example offered here was originally delivered to the U.S. and represents one of the final models produced, rolling off the line in 1972. Since then, it has been partially restored and converted to European specifications.
