Beschreibung

Porsche unveiled its third-generation 911 at the 1988 Paris Motor Show. While appearing similar to the G series, which had been in production for almost fifteen years, the new type 964 was claimed to be 85% new, sharing little with the outgoing model but its traditional silhouette.

The 964 possessed superior aerodynamics to the G series, thanks to body-integrated plastic front and rear bumpers, as well as flat undertrays underneath the chassis which covered much of the front suspension, transmission tunnel, and engine, and reduced drag and lift. An electrically adjustable spoiler was recessed on the rear cover and provided additional downforce at speed.

A new type M64/01 3.6-liter air-cooled flat-six delivered 247 hp and 228 lbs./ft. of torque in standard form. Other improvements included a coil-over suspension, twin-plug ignition, power steering, anti-lock brakes, available all-wheel drive, and a newly developed four-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission.

Initially released in coupe or cabriolet form, other variants were introduced including a Targa and a Turbo model with wide fender flares. In October 1992, Porsche announced the return of a Speedster model to the 964 lineup. Similar in construct to the 1989 911 Speedster, the 964 again paid homage to the distinct convertible body style of the original 356 Speedster. It offered a windshield that was lower and more raked than that of the standard cabriolet on which it was based, a thin fabric folding top, while a dual hump tonneau cover replaced the back seats.

936 Speedster models were built in total for the 1993 model year, with some later examples being completed as 1994 cars. While the 1989 911 Speedster was made available in both narrow and wide Turbo-body form, the 964 was offered only with the narrow body shape. However, due to repeated requests from VIP customers for a Turbo-Look Speedster, Porsche later acquiesced and made the configuration available through their “special wishes” Porsche Exclusive department.

The Turbo-Look Speedster could only be ordered upon special request and was never included in official sales literature or internal data sheets. Beyond the obvious fender flares to accommodate wider wheels and tires, the Turbo-Look Speedster models featured several alterations over the standard narrow-body model. To avoid having to use extra-wide wheel spacers, the rear-axle trailing arms and hub assembly of the Turbo 3.3 was used. Other parts foraged from the Turbo parts bin included 21 mm and 22 mm front and rear anti-roll bars, and rear brake calipers.

The Turbo-Look option from Porsche Exclusive is understood to have cost 16,291 deutschmarks for the 1993 model year, rising to 17,999 for 1994. Only 16 Turbo-Look Speedsters are believed to have been built, with 11 built during regular production and assigned with special option code “Z 16771.” The remaining five were converted by Porsche after they were hypothetically ready for delivery and retrofitted with the Turbo-Look modifications.

This 1994 Porsche 964 Turbo-Look Speedster is finished in Guards Red over a black leather interior. Corroborated by its Porsche Certificate of Authenticity and a copy of its build sheet, this factory-built “Z 16771” code Turbo-Look Speedster was completed by the factory in September 1993, and specified with a limited-slip differential, automatic climate control, onboard computer, silver-painted wheels, Blaupunkt “Symphony” radio, and model designation delete. Delivered new in Germany, this car’s first owner is not known; however, the Speedster was acquired in July 1997 by Roger Orzeslki of Niebüll, Germany. The long-term caretaker of the Speedster, Mr. Orzeslki kept the car until its sale to the consignor, a discerning American Porsche collector.

Displaying 29,479 km – approximating 18,317 miles – on its odometer at the time of cataloguing, this car is believed to be the lowest mileage example of the 16 factory-built Turbo-Look Speedsters. Retaining its original matching-numbers engine per its Porsche COA, this car appears in exceptional and highly original cosmetic condition throughout, except for Turbo 3.6 wheels and brakes. The original wheels and brakes accompany this sale, in addition to books, tools, keys, spare, jack, and accessories.

The 964 Turbo-Look Speedsters are among the rarest air-cooled Porsches known to exist. This low-mileage and uncommonly original example is worthy of the best Porsche collections in the world, and truly a near-unrepeatable experience.
