MODEL HISTORY
The Ferrari 365 GTB/4, universally known as the Daytona, marked the evolution of Ferrari’s front-engined V12 grand touring lineage, succeeding the celebrated 275 GTB/4. The model made its public debut at the 1968 Paris Salon, where it immediately signaled a new era of performance and design for the marque.
Penned by Pininfarina and executed by Scaglietti, the Daytona’s striking, wedge-influenced bodywork represented a dramatic departure from its predecessor. Beneath the sculpted bonnet lay a further development of Gioacchino Colombo’s legendary four-cam V12. Displacing 4.4 liters and fed by six Weber carburetors, the engine produced approximately 352 horsepower, delivering formidable performance and a top speed of roughly 280 km/h (174 mph), figures that placed the Daytona among the fastest production road cars in the world at the time of its introduction.
Positioned as Ferrari’s flagship gran turismo of the late 1960s, the 365 GTB/4 was developed in an era of intense competition among Italian manufacturers. In particular, Ferrari was determined that its front-engined V12 grand tourer would rival, and ultimately surpass, the performance credentials of contemporary mid-engined challengers such as the Lamborghini Miura, especially in terms of outright speed and sustained high-speed touring capability.
Between 1968 and 1973, Ferrari produced 1,284 examples of the 365 GTB/4 Berlinetta. Of these, approximately 530 early cars were built with the distinctive plexiglass-covered headlamp panel, a defining design feature that stretched across the nose and concealed the headlights behind a clear acrylic panel. These early “Plexi” cars are widely regarded as the purest expression of Leonardo Fioravanti’s original design and today rank among the most desirable Daytona variants.
Beginning in 1971, evolving lighting regulations, particularly those affecting the United States market, necessitated a revision to the front fascia. The elegant plexiglass panel was replaced by retractable pop-up headlamps, a configuration that remained in use for the remainder of production.
Today, the 365 GTB/4 “Plexi” Daytona stands as one of the most coveted front-engined Ferraris of the classic era, admired for its combination of dramatic styling, competition-bred engineering, and exceptional high-speed capability.

ABOUT THIS 365 GTB/4 DAYTONA
The example offered here was completed in March 1971 and delivered new the following month to its first owner in Italy through Dino Ravasio & Figli of Verona, an official Ferrari dealer at the time.
While the earliest years of the car’s life remain largely undocumented, the Daytona later found its way to Germany, where it was owned by an enthusiast based in Munich. During this period, the car was actively enjoyed in a number of notable Ferrari gatherings and driving events. In 2003, the Daytona participated in the 25th Anniversary celebration of the Ferrari Club Deutschland, held in Baden-Baden. Continuing its tradition of use in prestigious marque events, the car also took part in the Ferrari Tribute to the Mille Miglia in 2010, an occasion that celebrates Ferrari’s historic connection to one of Italy’s most storied road races.
Subsequently, the car passed to another German owner residing in Hanover, who registered the vehicle in his name in March 2012. In July 2016, chassis 14183 was inspected and certified by Ferrari Classiche, confirming the originality of the chassis and body and verifying that the car retains a correct-type Tipo 251 engine along with its original 605 gearbox.
The Daytona was later deregistered in April 2017 and displayed on the stand of Ferrari Eberlein at the prestigious Techno-Classica Essen, one of the world’s foremost classic car exhibitions. It subsequently entered the ownership of the respected German classic car specialist C.F. Mirbach.
In July 2021, this wonderfully authentic and Ferrari Classiche–certified 365 GTB/4 “Plexi” Daytona joined the care of its current custodian, becoming part of a significant Ferrari collection. Today, the car is presented in its original color combination of Nero 20-B-50 Salchi over Pelle Nera, a timeless specification that perfectly complements the model’s dramatic styling. Both the exterior and interior are described as being in excellent condition.
The odometer currently displays 59,089 kilometers, indicating that over the course of its life the car has been driven sparingly averaging just over 1,000 kilometers per year, a testament to the careful stewardship it has enjoyed throughout its history.
