The Citroën SM alone represents the dream of a time when automotive elegance rhymed with high performance. Let's not forget that at the beginning of the 1970s, there were no speed limits on the French road network. The SM was born at a time when speed was a selling point and gasoline was cheap. Unveiled at the 1970 Geneva Motor Show, this French-style Super Car is a success with a sublime design by Robert Opron. It is ahead of its time both in terms of technology and its futuristic line. Citroën buys Maserati in 1968, and the result is an impressive 2670 cc double-camshaft V6 under the bonnet. A genuine technological showcase for what Citroën knew how to do best at the time, it features the revolutionary DIRAVI steering system, power-assisted brakes, hydropneumatic suspension, swivelling headlamps with wheels, etc. The SM will set out to conquer the United States, and models intended for this market are recognisable by their specific front headlamps and the retro-reflectors visible on the wings. Under the hood is the Merak's 180 hp 3.0l V6 engine with a 3-speed automatic transmission from Borg and Warner.
The SM presented here was sold new in California and was parked more precisely in Santa Barbara when she leaves the USA to land in France in 2011. Dry climate helping, this one is in good shape and is very healthy. Brun scarabée with a brown interior, the current owner is working on restarting the car and improving the mechanics. In February 2012, for example, the brake pressure accumulator is replaced, the steering is changed (as well as the steering wheel for a new one). During the test drive, the SM gratified us with its smoothness and the smooth operation of its gearbox. Now highly sought-after, SMs are becoming rarer on the market and are considered the culmination of Citroën's automotive haute couture. Its lines and interior remain impressively modern and its mechanics are now reliable thanks to numerous specialists in the model. In good general condition, our SM is an excellent opportunity to discover a GT with iconoclastic charm whose refinement and rarity continue to increase in popularity.
