In 1988, BMW presented the Z1, a roadster that did many things differently. Opening doors? Far too ordinary. In the Z1, they were electrically retracted into the sills – even while driving, if you felt like getting some fresh air. Added to this was a plastic skin over a self-supporting chassis, sandwich underbody and diffuser – terms more commonly associated with motor racing.

Under the bonnet, however, the technology was familiar: a 2.5-litre inline six-cylinder engine with 170 hp. Solid Munich engineering that had little trouble with the car's weight of just under 1,250 kilograms. Driving pleasure was guaranteed, but the technology behind it was even more spectacular. And because the Z1 looked almost like a concept car, it immediately became an object of speculation. Even before the first car rolled off the production line in Munich, 5,000 orders had been placed.

But craftsmanship came at a price. A maximum of six cars were produced per day, each body handcrafted, each detail individual. Those looking for a variety of colours could initially choose from four, later six paint finishes – including special shades for the more extroverted customers. 38.56% opted for Toprot, 28.96% for Traumschwarz and 25.46% for Urgrün, while only 2.83% had the courage to choose Magicviolett and 1.76% Fungelb.

Around 8,000 units were produced by 1991. The Z1 remained unique in BMW's history: more a demonstration of technology than a business venture, more a show car than a production model. A roadster that made doors disappear – and itself burned out like a shooting star in the Munich sky.

This BMW Z1 is a special model in many ways. It is one of only 226 Z1s built in Magic Violet. Of these 226, only two (!) were delivered with a yellow fabric interior. In addition, this Z1 has only covered 10,124 kilometres to date. With just over 3,000 kilometres on the clock, the contributor was able to purchase it from the bankruptcy estate of a car dealership. Since then, he has covered around 7,000 kilometres with it – making the Z1 one of the most driven cars in his collection. Proof of how much he has grown fond of this rare, colourful bird.
